outfit of the week: confessions of a struggling blogger

Well hello, lovely reader! Long time no see… but that’s my bad. My updates are about as regular as a teenager’s period. Anyways. I thought I looked incredibly cute today, so here’s my outfit of the week. I’m also in love with this purse, can you tell?

Top - H&M
Jeans - Ardene
Jewelry - Lia Sophia
Purse - Ardene

ALSO: Yes, I realize that the various stores I got my clothes from are basically as white as it gets. And I stopped caring a long time ago.

4 People You NEED to Know About Before They Get Famous

Hey there! Long time no post... probably because I've been deathly sick lately, and just came back from getting an extra-long Q-Tip shoved down my throat to see if I have strep throat. Doctors are always fun.

Anyways, I've been listening/watching/reading about some fantastic people who are becoming super successful as of late, so I thought why not give you a list of some amazing people you should know about before they're crazy famous? Without further ado, here is a list filled with some some SERIOUS talent:

  1. PAINT

         Thing they do: YouTuber
          Age: 22
Why you should love them: This guy is basically already famous, but I thought I'd add him here anyways. You've probably already watched at least one of this guy's videos, or have had one of his songs stuck in your head. PAINT (also known as Jon Cozart) is the creator of the absolutely hilarious (and kind of bizarre) After Ever After videos where he basically predicts what happened to all our favourite Disney princesses after "Happily Ever After". Cool, right? You also might recognize another one of his popular videos, Harry Potter in 99 Seconds. You had that entire song memorized at one point in your life. Don't lie to yourself.

  1. NerdyAndQuirky

           Thing they do: YouTuber
           Age: 16
Why you should love them: She’s only 16 years old, but Sabrina has the class and comedic timing of someone twice her age. Her videos are totally relatable to your typical everyday fangirl, with clips like How To Attract Human, An Honest Introduction to Jogging, and even How to Take Care of a Fangirl. If you’re a fan of the Vlogbrothers (NERDFIGHTERS!), you might remember when she made a video for their channel when John was on leave. If you like your YouTubers young, and your sarcasm, well, sarcastic, Sabrina is your girl.

  1. Hannah Alper

          Thing they do: Blogger/Activist/Motivational speaker
          Age: 11
Why you should love them: I’m only going to say this once, people, so listen up. HANNAH ALPER IS GOING TO RULE THE WORLD SOME DAY. Got that? Good. Here’s the thing: this girl is 11 years old, and is already paving her way to global domination. I saw her when she spoke at Free the Children’s We Day in Calgary last month, and she’s so driven. She also spoke at a TEDx event (I can give you the link if you want) about “finding your spark”, where she talked a lot about what inspired her to start making a difference. Her blog has reached thousands of youth, and has empowered them to make a difference. She’s now a Free the Children ambassador and is also the JUNO Awards (if you live under a rock, the Junos are basically the Canadian equivalent to the Grammys) eco-blogger. Talk about girl power!

  1. Virginia to Vegas (VIIV)

 Thing they do: Musician
          Age: 24
Why you should love them: I’ve seen Derik Baker (a.k.a. VIIV) live twice, and i’m unashamed to say I bawled my eyes out both times, because his music is just THAT beautiful. His debut EP, Volume 1, is on iTunes, and it’s definitely worth checking out. His music is harder to describe than you might think - it’s too classy to be pop, but it can’t really be anything else. Nonetheless, his talent is unstoppable and this guy is going to go far. I mean, he’s 24 and has already mastered the love song. Case in point: Colourful. He’s currently opening up for Alyssa Reid on her Time Bomb tour, but I’m hoping he’ll be doing a headliner very soon! (EDIT: he's also so attractive it isn't even fair. #ladyboner #justsaying)

So that's it for this week...if there are any more people on their way to global domination, let me know in the comments, or tweet me at @teenqueenblog!
All my love,

r.i.p. teenage kicks (and teenage queen)

How was your week, lovelies? I'm going to try to keep blog posts regulated to once a week unless they are time-sensitive for whatever reason, just so I can get back into the groove of things. As you might have seen, I changed my pseudonym from Teenage Kicks to Teenage Queen. Why, I hear you asking? Well, I just found out that there are several other bands and other pop culture icons called Teeage Kicks, so I changed it to be a bit more original. In fact, I actually came up with the name Teenage Kicks from a band. A fictional one. I once read this book called Take A Bow about this group of misfits at a preppy NYC fine arts academy who got together and created a band, and it's still one of my favourite books.

I came up with Teenage Queen when I was going through some of my favourite band's (a.k.a. 5 Seconds of Summer's) old Keeks, and I stumbled across one of them dancing to a song they had written called Teenage Queen. It was the cutest song EVER, and I absolutely loved it. It was only a 30-second snippet of the song, but that's okay. Here are the lyrics from the snippet:

"She's so cool
Rewrites the rules
She ain't got no time for you
She's a teenage queen
She hit me baby one more time
Like Britney did in nintey-nine
Like something from a dream"

Isn't that cute? Anyways, they ultimately decided not to release the song, and they sold it to another artist. A k-pop artist. It was translated to Korean. I was distraught. But I still loved the only 30-second english snippet that exists.

So that's the story behind my pseudonym - and this one is here to stay.

lazy girl's guide to beauty

This one goes out to all my girls who love their hair and makeup. Here are a few #beautyhacks that will make your life so much easier.

  • Use a white or champagne-coloured eyeliner on your lower waterline to hide how tired (or hungover!) you are.
  • To get the most out of your mascara, stick it in your bra for a few minutes to heat it up.
  • If you accidentally buy a foundation that's too dark for your skin, adding a bit of moisturizer to it will lighten it up.
  • Rub Vaseline on your pulse points and let it sit for a minute before applying perfume - it'll make it last longer.
  • If you want your lips to appear fuller, apply a ligt eyeliner or eyeshadow on your cupid's bow, and a darker one under your bottom lip.
  • Too lazy to wash all your makeup off at night? Keep some facial wipes by your bed.
  • To make your lipstick last longer, hold a tissue against your lips after applying your lippie, and dust some translucent powder over it.
  • Nails stained from dark nail polish? Use an old toothbrush and scrub them with a paste of water and baking soda.
  • Spray some dry shampoo or hairspray on your bobby pins to give them better hold.

There you go, my lovelies! What would you like to see next from me?

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Need You Right Now by Bethany Mota

Alright, so Bethany Mota's debut single came out today, and I'm honestly not that suprised that she can sing. She can do pretty much everything, right? I'll admit, I'm a bit of a pessimist when it comes to her, because I was a huge fan of hers for years, but once she started a clothing line with Aeropostale and all that, her fame went through the roof, and I started liking her less. Maybe it's my desparate need to hate most mainstream artists and celebrities to feel like I'm more original, or that all the girls at my school (even the ones I don't particularly enjoy) are now going around wearing her t-shirts with their UGG boots and Lululemon leggings. Sigh.

So, I just gave the song a few listens, and I'm 98% sure the majority of it is autotuned. I won't deny it, Beth is an amazing singer, compared to the unsuprisingly mediocre guy named Mike singing alongside her. It's a perfectly generic teenybopper pop tune with bare bones lyrics that could be either repetitive and easy to memorize, or just plain dumb. ("Second guessing/Every second checking my phone"? Seriously?) Even though we all know I'm going to be downloading on my phone on the next 3 minutes and becoming obsessed with it. It's just THAT kind of song.

In conclusion: it's a song with a very dance-able rythym, and, though predictable, the lyrics are catchy, and I would say easy to sing along to except for the fact it's SO DAMN AUTOTUNED. This song will no doubt become the next White Girl anthem and my next guilty pleasure song, but if you really want to listen to good-quality songs about relationships and lost love, you'd probably be better off sticking to Taylor Swift.

new post ideas!

Just realized that I haven't posted in almost a week. I'm terrible at this blogging thing!
Anyways, I have a few ideas for what my next few posts are going to be... so, would you guys like to see a review of some new Android apps I downloaded today, a review of the new 5 Seconds of Summer EP, Good Girls, or a first impression of Bethany Mota's song Need You Right Now?

I think I'm going to post the app review first anyways, because Good Girls hasn't come out yet, and neither has Need You Right Now. You might be getting it as early as tomorrow, since it's Canadian Thanksgiving and I have a day off school. Whoo!
If you're a fellow Canadian, how are you spending your Thanksgiving long weekend?

life update.

Wow - I didn't realize it's been almost a week since my last post! I've been surprisingly busy lately, so I guess I should give you a short update on my life. I went to West Edmonton Mall today with my best friend George (Her name isn't actually George, but we call each other Fred and George, as in the Weasley twins from Harry Potter.), and we were supposed to go to Galaxyland, but when we got there we found out we'd have like half an hour there before it closed for a private event, so we just skipped it and hung out around the mall instead.

I've been dancing like crazy lately too - the dance season is finally in full swing, so I'm basically doing jetés left right and center. Even though I'm no good at jetés. Whatever.

So that's a quick summary of my week. How was yours, dear reader? Tell me all about it!
